This workshop helps senior executives prepare for strategic cyber challenges, lead cyber security change, and review the impact of their initiatives. Building on the SCI foundaional paper "Creating Social Cyber Value", participants diagnose their organisation’s “cyber social system” (inside and outside the firm): culture, incentives, knowledge flows and external relationships. The course has also been inspired by the call of Kevin Mandia, a leading cyber entrepreneur, to “know your organisation”. He said that cyber security depends on an ability to mine collective organisational knowledge—systems topology, people, processes, suppliers and infrastructure—for strategic advantage in cyber defence and resilience.

WHAT IS SOCIAL CYBER VALUE?

All security outcomes in cyberspace are determined by individual people, whose behaviour is shaped by their psychology and social setting, either organisational or cultural. Yet there has been little evidence globally of the necessary adjustment of policy or practice that gives due weight to these social science dimensions, alongside the technology itself. There is a sharp imbalance between investments in technology for security in cyber space as against social science at almost every level: national government, business enterprise, NGOs or academia. This program is based on the need in cyber management at all levels to optimise performance of information ecosystems to take account off its social realities.
